Volkswagen Golf (Mk I and Mk V badged as Volkswagen Rabbit in North America) is a compact car / small family car manufactured by Volkswagen. The Golf is Volkswagen’s best-selling model in history and world’s third best-selling model, with more than 24 million built as of 2005[1]. Most production of the Golf has been in the 3-door hatchback style. 5-door hatchback, station wagon (estate/Variant) and convertible (Cabrio) variants have also been available, as well as a sedan (saloon) car based on the Golf (see Volkswagen Jetta). They have existed everywhere between basic personal cars and high-performance sports coupés. The success of the Golf popularized the use of the hatchback in the C segment of cars and started the entire golf class. See also Volkswagen A platform.

he Volkswagen New Beetle is a car introduced by Volkswagen in 1998, drawing heavily on the design cues of the original Beetle. Based on a Volkswagen Golf, the “retro” design proved to be more successful in some markets than in others. It is assembled at the VW Puebla factory in Mexico. The big contrast between the New Beetle and the Classic Beetle is that, like most cars, the New Beetle has the engine in the front and storage in the back. ConceptsAt the 1994 North American International Auto Show, Volkswagen unveiled the J Mays-penned “Concept 1″, a concept car with futuristic styling deliberately reminiscent of the original Beetle’s rounded shape. It is a cabriolet, which retains the flowing lines of the sedan, yet captures the chic looks of the original Beetle cabriolet. It was equipped with “large diameter” 17 inch wheels (with the VW logo, just like the original Beetle hubcap) with low-profile tires. Also, in the concept car, there is a “zero emission” hybrid design made for it originally (it was said to use 248-V) the fuel consumption of the original is 2 L. New BeetleStrong public reaction convinced the company to move the car into production, and in 1998 Volkswagen launched the New Beetle, designed by J Mays and Freeman Thomas at the company’s California design studio. The New Beetle is related to the original only in name and appearance (including the absence of a car emblem script with the exception of the VW logo): under the hood, it is a modern car in every way, based on the Volkswagen A platform (Mark 4 Volkswagen Golf). 2006 New Beetle cabrio Enlarge 2006 New Beetle cabrio VW New Beetle MY2006 Enlarge VW New Beetle MY2006 Still, it carried many of designs reference to the old Beetle: separate wings, vestigial running boards, sloping headlamps, large round tail light, as well as a high rounded roofline that provide enough headroom for tall drivers. In stark contrast to the original, the U.S. Insurance Institute of Highway Safety gave the New Beetle among the best safety ratings in its class at the time of its launch. The car was widely considered a flop in Europe, but it was a success in the United States. There, marketing campaigns enhanced the continued goodwill towards the original, and helped the new model to inherit it. The Volkswagen New Beetle was Motor Trend’s Import Car of the Year [1] for 1999. A convertible version of New Beetle started production two years after launch, after many buyers had aftermarket conversions. For the 2006 model, the exterior is slightly redesigned with bigger bumpers and is fitted with a 2.5L 150hp I5 base engine, as seen on the A5 Jetta. The New Beetle RSiBetween 2001 and 2003 Volkswagen produced 250 limited edition New Beetles with the designation RSi in Europe. The RSi was powered by a 225 hp 3.2 liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed gear box and Volkswagen’s all-wheel drive system 4motion. It had a Remus twin-pipe exhaust. The suspension was tuned by Porsche, featuring a severely altered rear suspension geometry more geared to the race track and a rear cross member behind the rear seats. Visually, the RSi differed in it’s 80mm wider fende

he Volkswagen Jetta is the sedan version of the compact car / small family car Volkswagen Golf, manufactured by Volkswagen since 1980. Between 1991 and 2005, the name was only used in North America and South Africa, as it was dropped in Europe in 1991, when it was replaced by the Vento, which was in turn replaced by the Bora in 1998. The Jetta was developed due in part of the Volkswagen marketing group’s observation that the North American market leaned more towards sedans as opposed to the Golf’s hatchback configuration. Similarly, in South Africa, the Jetta remains more popular than the Golf. This proved to be a wise move on Volkswagen’s part, as the Jetta became the best-selling European car in the United States. The mechanicals are shared with the other Volkswagen A platform cars. Currently, its marketing phrase in the US is “Safe happens”.

The Volkswagen Touareg is a luxury 4×4 (US: SUV) automobile manufactured by Volkswagen. It is the first of this class ever produced by this manufacturer. The Touareg was co-developed with Porsche, who was also looking to add an SUV to their lineup, as a cost-sharing initiative. Porsche shares this chassis to underpin their Cayenne SUV, although there are numerous styling, equipment and technical differences between the two vehicles. Also, the Touareg replaced the Eurovan for North America as the company’s truck. The Touareg was Car and Driver magazine’s Best Luxury SUV for 2003, Motor Trend magazine’s Sport/Utility of the Year for 2004, “Four Wheeler” magazine’s Four Wheeler of the Year for 2005 & Overlander’s 2003 4WDOTY The following engines are available: * 174 PS (128 kW, 172 hp) 2.5 L diesel I5 * 225 PS (165 kW, 225 hp) 3.0 L diesel V6, 500 N·m (369 ft·lbf) * 240 PS (177 kW, 236 hp) 3.2 L gasoline V6 * 310 PS (228 kW, 305 hp) 4.2 L gasoline V8 * 313 PS (230 kW, 308 hp) 5.0 L diesel V10, 750 N·m (550 ft·lbf) * 450 hp (331 kW) 6.0 L gasoline W12, 599 N·m (442 ft·lbf) (somewhat limited-edition. Not available in the US) Link to the V10 experience site: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/new_cars/touareg The twin-turbocharged diesel V10 engine pushes the Touareg from 0–62 mph (100 km/h) in 7.8 seconds, and on to 130 mph (230 km/h) maximum. The Diesel V10 was offered in the United States for a limited time in 2004 and 2005, but — emissions regulations forced it off the market for a temporary period. Volkswagen is working on fixing these issues, and will return the V10 to the US lineup in 2006. The W12 version should reach 100 km/h (60 mph) in 5.9 seconds. Production of the W12 Touareg is limited to 500 units. Of these, 330 are slated for Saudi Arabia, with none going to the United States. Despite the misconception that the Touareg and Cayenne are “soft-roaders” with little or no off-road ability, Porsche/Volkswagen jointly did extensive off-road testing with test mules and both vehicles are in actuality extremely capable off-road, all that is really necessary are more aggressive tires. Volkswagen, for instance, entered a modified Touareg in the Paris

Blurring the frosty German landscape at an indicated 270 kph (168 mph) in a 2007 Audi S8 proved an exercise in noise. Not road or wind noise, mind you, but rather a grating clatter courtesy of AC/DC and the S8′s optional $7800, 1100-watt Bang & Olufsen sound system, whose 14 aluminum-grille-covered speakers glitter the cabin.

Underhood, however, is where the real wattage lies. Borrowed from the Lamborghini Gallardo and tweaked just right, the S8′s 5.2-liter V-10 engine is an aluminum jewel that weighs in at just 485 pounds–44 pounds less than the M5′s V-10–yet produces 450 horses and 398 pound-feet. From Gallardo to S8, the V-10 has undergone myriad modifications, most notable a bump from 4961 to 5204 cc and the implementation of direct fuel injection. Power dips 63 ponies compared with the Lambo V-10, but torque rises 22 pound-feet. Other alterations include a higher compression ratio–12.5:1 compared with 11.0:1–and a less frenetic 7000-rpm redline, compared with the Lambo’s 8100. Mated to a six-speed Tiptronic automatic with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the S8′s V-10 matches the pony total of another Audi monster, the 6.0-liter W-12.

Out on the autobahn, the S8 rumbles much like its W-12 brethren, delivering the kind of endless power that appears to build gradually until you realize 100 kph (62 mph) can be eclipsed in about the time it takes to count one hand’s fingers, and 250 kph (155 mph) seems the ideal pace to set the cruise control. Keeping a leash on that power are carbon-ceramic brake discs, which will be a post-release option; initial S8s will get steel discs. The ride, even hampered by 35-series Pirellis and the firmest “dynamic” air-suspension setting, feels taut, yet supple enough for jaunts to the theater.
`
With the V-10 generating no more horsepower than the W-12, why opt for the S8? Audi says a well-equipped S8 will sticker for under $100,000, which is a sizeable discount compared with the $120,610 W-12. The S8 is far sportier than the W-12, with its standard 20-inch wheels, 5.1-inch-shorter wheelbase, a ride height lowered by 0.8 inch, a stiffer adaptive air suspension, quicker steering, and a rear-biased Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Plus, the S8 gets Audi’s sexy S treatment, which includes aluminum-look side-mirror housings, an integrated trunklid spoiler, four oval exhaust tips, LED daytime-running lights, and a prominent grille with chrome-like vertical struts. The treatment pours over inside, where carbon fiber and brushed-aluminum inlays beautify the dash, console, and doors; light-gray

Clear-glass headlights have sweeping lower edges and an inward taper. Body-colored bumpers are said to accentuate the car’s low center of gravity. Visibly flared wheel arches round out the picture.

Standard tires on 2.0T models measure 16 inches in diameter, but 17-inch tires are installed on models with the V-6 engine. Xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, a moonroof and Parktronic rear parking assistance are available. Optional adaptive headlights can pivot 15 degrees.

Sedans and wagons seat five people and have four-way power lumbar support. The seat cushions have prominent bolsters. Standard equipment includes automatic dual-zone air conditioning. Leather seating surfaces are included in 3.2 models. The available Audi Navigation Plus system has a 5-inch video screen.

A 200-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder powers 2.0T models. An aluminum 255-hp, 3.1-liter V-6 is installed in 3.2 editions. A six-speed-manual gearbox is standard in all models except the 3.2 FrontTrak. The multitronic CVT is available only in models equipped with FrontTrak, but sedans and wagons with quattro all-wheel drive can have a six-speed Tiptronic automatic that permits manual gear selection.

Side curtain-type airbags deploy from above the side windows. Side-impact airbags for front occupants are standard, and rear-seat airbags are optional. Audi’s Electronic Stabilization Program incorporates Brake Assist.

Audi is poised to capture a cross section of the burgeoning youth market with its all-new A3. Initially available as a five-door hatch, the A3 is powered by a turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection. Besides being miserly in fuel consumption and emissions output, the powerplant sends an impressive 200 horsepower and 207 lb.-ft of torque to the front wheels, the latter available at 1,800 through 5,000 rpm. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with an optional Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG) optional. A quattro all-wheel-drive version should arrive in early 2006, replete with 3.2-liter V6 power and the DSG transmission.

Road handling is accomplished via a MacPherson front and four-link rear suspension, an electromechanical steering rack with speed-dependent power assistance, and 17- or optional 18-inch wheels. The optional Sport Suspension drops the A3 by 15mm and includes stiffer tuning.

Stylistically, the A3 is drop-dead gorgeous, with crisp angular lines, bulbous wheel arches and a bold nose that is unmistakably Audi. Inside, the automaker blends a supple cloth interior (leather is optionally available), with the stylish edge of aluminum trim and dials. The look is sporty with a dash of elegance and the ergonomics beg for long stints behind the wheel.

Loaded with a bevy of amenities, the A3 includes automatic climate control with pollen filter and sun sensor, a 140-watt stereo replete with 10 speakers and satellite preparation (both Sirius and XM are available), 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows and power door locks.

Significant options include the Sport Package (tuned suspension, aluminum interior trim, a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel, fog lamps, roof spoiler, leather seating and sport seats) and the Premium package, which nets all but the suspension tuning and roof spoiler from the Sport Package, and also adds a Homelink programmable transmitter, a trip computer, auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and a power driver seat. Xenon headlamps are also available, as well as the Open Sky sunroof and rear-side airbags
